We didn't plan very far in advance for our wedding. I had been working at UCLA Med Center for almost 2 years. I was 24, and I lived in a small apartment by myself in Panorama City. I don't remember how far in advance we decided on a date. We chose the date (Good Friday) because I had the day off and Dennis didn't have school. I bought a white, long dress for $20 from a shop at Northridge Mall. I had been given a lacy triangle scarf from my Aunt Margaret, when I was about 12. It seemed appropriate for a headpiece, although it was not a viel. The white shoes I borrowed from my mother-in-law-to-be, the night before the wedding. My mother picked up flowers from Von's grocery store and tied a large white ribbon in a bow around them. I carried the wedding hankie that my mom had carried. I had a blue garter, but I don't remember where I bought it. I remember Dennis didn't want any one there, but settled on the parents. The morning of the Wedding, I had told Nancy (my 14 year old sis) to just get dressed and come. My older brother wanted to come and was upset that a sib went. Dennis, me, Nancy, Sally (Dennis' mom), Charles and Edith (my parents) went to the courthouse (there because Dennis wouldn't get married in a church and the price was right) in Calabasas. The ceremony was short and sweet. Dennis' mom never let me forget that I said "uh-huh", instead of "I do". We then went to International House of Pancakes for breakfast. The next evening we had a reception at my mom's house. They got cold cuts and sides from a German restaurant (about $50). I made the cake (white, 3 tier) and the grooms (German chocolate) cake. Along with the folks, the siblings Nancy, Chuck, John and Kay, Donna and Joe, the only friends Dennis would sanction, were the Smiths. He said they were family. To the Saturday reception Dennis wore Levi's and a T-shirt. John (my brother) asked if he could put a better shirt on. My dad came out with the Hawaiian shirt that is in the pictures. I had to go to work the next day.
Mom and I were married by a Justice of the Peace in Calabasas between trials. My mom, mom's mom, dad, and sister were there. Mom's outfit cost $26. Mine was free. (It was just my school clothes.) The Justice of the Peace cost $10. (It was actually a donation.) Total cost of wedding, $36. We went to breakfast afterward at IHOP, I think, and Grandpa Ackerman probably paid. The reception was at the Ackerman's that evening. Johnny made me wear a Hawaiian shirt over my Tee shirt. The cakes were home-baked. It was Good Friday, Hitler's birthday, 30 years ago, a very pleasant spring day. That's about all I remember.
That's about all Kaolin will remember of yours 30 years from now, so don't waste a lot of money on it.
