How it All Began

On a cold winter night in November 2000, Kaolin and Amy met at a BART station. After talking through a game of pool, they were able to develop a friendship.

Then one May night when everyone else was studying for finals, Kaolin went over to Amy's for a Margarita Night. After perhaps one too many margaritas, the truth serum had taken effect. Somehow, amid the backdrop of the movie Almost Famous, they both confessed how they really felt about each other. Taken completely by surprise that the other felt the same way, the two kissed (after Kaolin politely asked if it was okay... what a gentleman!).

After eons of Amy doing her best not to mention marriage too often (lest it scare her one true love), New Year's Eve 2002 came. As Amy prepared a lovely dinner--something not unusual for her, Kaolin did his best to suppress nervous energy. Amy scurried to set the table, light the candles, shower, dress, and primp. Meanwhile, Kaolin got dressed up, and even put on a tie... Slightly suspicious, but as they were celebrating New Year's Eve alone this year, Amy was willing to dismiss it as celebratory. Nearly unable to contain himself, Kaolin let "it's time for new traditions" slip, which Amy dismissed as weird.

After the wonderful dinner, and a slightly sick Kaolin, the two retreated to the couch to wait for the ball to drop over Times Square. With one minute on the clock, Kaolin got up, and pulled Amy up with him. A little confused, she went along with it. As the ball started to drop, Kaolin looked Amy in the eye and asked, "Will you marry me?". Suspicious of his intentions, Amy looked at him, then at the box, then back at Kaolin. Confused, bewildered, confused, Amy was struggling with what to do when the phone rang. "I should get that, it's probably my family." Who else would call at this moment than Amy's Tante Nancy. After a few minutes of explaining to Nancy what just happened, Amy was able to give a nod when Kaolin tentatively wandered over and asked, "So is this a 'yes'?".
